Our Learning

Physical Education

At Whitehall Nursery and Infants School we want our children and families to have a passion for active learning. We use exciting physical activities to provide children with opportunities to work as a team, be co-operative, be creative and learn how to deal positively with challenges and so develop resilience. They also learn the importance of exercise for their physical and mental health and how an active lifestyle will have a greater effect on their well-being.

Intent

Intent

Whitehall Nursery and Infants School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills.. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Whitehall, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

PE at Whitehall Nursery and Infants provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities. All our P.E lessons are taught by a Sports Coach.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in one high quality PE lessons each week, covering different sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time the Sports coach is outside with the children Monday and Tuesdays.

The coach does sport clubs two evenings per week.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year a small group of Year 1 and 2 children are invited to become Play Leaders for the school at lunch-times. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time play.

Children participate in Sports days once a year.

During the school day pupils participate in short sharp bursts of exercise which helps to get oxygen to their brain and wake them up!  We also use child friendly yoga movements and story-based meditation to help children to calm down, relax and experience well-being.  These physical activities throughout the day, every day, help children to learn from first-hand experience the benefits that exercise can have on improving their concentration and readiness for learning.

We value our links with our parents and we like to invite parents to join in with a variety of PE workshops and events including the school’s exciting sports day activities at our local park. Pupils at Whitehall Nursery and Infants enjoy taking part in sports competitions within school and within our local area.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Sports Premium Funding

We are very pleased to receive additional funding for sports and PE from the government. We hope that our children develop healthy lifestyles and we want to support them to reach the performance levels they are capable of. The funding enables us to develop our current provision and increase the opportunities we provide for our children. We offer the children opportunities to work with specialist PE coaches in lessons and after school. Our current after school clubs include dance and drama, multi-sports and football. The funding also allows for us to be a part of The Streetly Academy Network. Together with a group of local primary schools, we participate in a range of events at the academy, such as their annual Multi-sports Festival which gives children the opportunity to experience competition and to work as a team. We also invite Streetly coaches into school to run parent workshops to support their knowledge and understanding of the all-round benefits exercise can have for children. They touch on subjects such as healthy eating and how children can engage in enjoyable exercise at home. Parents have found these sessions extremely informative and useful.  The funding also allows our teachers to work with the specialist coaches to improve their subject knowledge and confidence in all areas of the PE curriculum. This ensures that children at Whitehall Nursery and Infant School receive the highest quality provision in this foundation subject.
